Let us know what you enjoy about the show!

The quest for clarity often leads us down winding paths of endless questions and searching, but what if the answers we seek come not from our relentless pursuit, but from learning to be still? This episode shares a beautiful Buddhist parable about Dawa, a troubled young man living near the ancient Samye Monastery in Tibet, whose confusion drives him to seek wisdom from a gardener monk.

Through the simple yet profound metaphors of a monastery garden and a clear spring, we explore how mental turbulence clouds our perception while stillness reveals truth. "Your mind is like water," the monk tells Dawa, "when it is turbulent, you cannot see clearly. But when it is still and calm, everything becomes clear." The story illuminates how our modern obsession with finding immediate answers often creates more confusion rather than clarity.

This tale from the Buddhist tradition beautifully illustrates the paradox that sometimes the path to understanding requires us to stop actively searching and instead create the conditions for wisdom to naturally emerge. Like plants that grow according to their own timeline, our insights unfold gradually when given space and patience. The parable reminds us that we all possess an internal garden of peace we can return to when life's questions and doubts become overwhelming.

Take a moment to reflect on where you might be creating unnecessary turbulence in your life. Could stillness be the very thing you need? As Dawa discovered in the gardens of Samye, sometimes the most powerful action is non-action – allowing our mental waters to settle so we can clearly see what has been there all along. Deep breath, my friends. What might become clear to you when you calm your internal waters?

Speaker 1:

Hey there. There's so much we can learn sometimes from a story, and I found this one from a collection of Buddhist parables and I just wanted to share it with you. A Journey to Inner Clarity from the Gardens of Samye. A young man named Dawa lived in a small village near Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet. Although Dawa lived near the monastery, he always felt confused and restless. The questions of life oppressed him and despite all his efforts, he could not see a clear path ahead. So one day, in desperation, he set out for Samya Monastery, and there he met an old monk who worked in the gardens of the monastery. The monk was known for his wisdom and his calm nature. Dawa shared his worries and fears with the monk and asked him for help. The monk smiled and led Dawa through the beautiful gardens of Samye. He showed him the diverse plants that grew there, some in full bloom and others just beginning to grow. You see, dawa, said the monk, every plant in this garden has its own time to grow and bloom. It is the same with us human beings Our realizations and growth do not come all at once, but rather step by step, as a bud that opens slowly. He led Dawa to a quiet corner of the garden where a clear spring flowed into a small pond, and the monk said your mind is like this water when it is turbulent, you cannot see clearly. But when it is still and calm, everything becomes clear.

Speaker 1:

Dawa spent the following weeks in the garden, meditating and helping the monk tend to the plants. Over time, his mind became calmer and his questions began to dissipate. He understood that the path to inner clarity is not achieved by constant searching and questioning, but by quieting the mind and being patient. Thus, dawa found his way to inner clarity in the gardens of Samye. Noah found his way to inner clarity in the gardens of Samye and although he went back to his village, he took the garden with him in his heart, a place of peace and clarity to which he could return to in moments of confusion and doubt. Isn't that beautiful, the power of stillness. As the water in the spring showed us, our minds are clearest when they are still, and a mentally calm state enables us to see the world and ourselves more clearly and to better understand our problems.

Speaker 1:

I just love this simple tale, the idea of letting go of constant searching. We all know that feeling right, but it's a great reminder Sometimes it's better to leave questions unanswered and to allow for the answers to arrive, to come on their own. This, of course, requires trust, patience and serenity, and serenity. I hope that you found this little tale resonated, as it did with me, and I'm so happy to share it with you. Deep breath, my friends. Calm those waters. Patience, trust, trust, namaste. I'm Lisa Hopkins. Thanks so much for listening. Stay safe and healthy, everyone, and remember to live in the moment.
